The Digital Storytellers Project

Tell your research story and its contribution to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a short video clip! - This was the briefing to researchers worldwide, wo participated in the Digital Storytellers Synthesis Project. In the process over 70 researchers got together in teams and produced over 40 video clips by sharing 15 camera kits.
Each team undertook an e-learning program and received remote editing support through Paititi Lab and its partners. The project idea was conceived by Dr. Carmenza Robledo (Td-Lab/ETHZ) in further developed in collaboration with Dr. Sonja Schenkel (Paititi Lab) with generous conceptual support by SDC (Aurelie Righetti) and SNSF (Dr. Claudia Zingeri).

The results of the project and the numerous videos produced can be seen on the Knowledge for Development Platform www.k4d.ch

E-learning Suite

The E-Learning can be taken on a flexible basis and is free of charge. Please note that check-lists and briefings were adapted to the process in the Digital Storyteller Project.

Preparation: Storytelling

We are excited to start the e-learning with the first Preparation and Guiding Documents. Please make sure you send us your first draft of the story grid which is the first assignment.

Session #1 - Filming Principles

Session 1 will focus on how to film a scene. This means how to establish a place, introduce people and look for interesting action. What are angles? What does framing mean? What are the different shot sizes? And how do you prepare a shot list?

Session #2: Getting Ready

Session 2 will focus on how to prepare the actual filming. What are daily routines during the filming? How do you assemble your camera? What is conscious filmmaking? How do you ask for people’s consent?

Session #3: Editing

Session 3 will focus on preparing the editing process, namely introducing the concept of a paper edit and explaining proper logging of raw material.
